The Dragonfly Surf FAQ’s
My daughter already surfs, can she skip the 4-week initiation program and just join the club?
During the 4-week initiation program we use surfing as a method to help us cultivate our culture of sisterhood and support. Time in the water is only a part of the experience as a whole. If your daughter is already an experienced surfer she will become a truly valuable part of the initiation program. We will put her mentoring skills in action and train her to assist in teaching and supporting the rest of the group. To ensure that our Club has a foundation based on inclusion, friendship and support, this 4-week program is required.
My daughter would love to join but doesn’t like to surf?
The 4-week initiation program involves getting in the water with a board, but it’s only a part of the entire experience. We are the most experienced surf instructors in the South Bay and cater to all levels of ability ensuring comfort and safety at all times. We know exactly when to encourage but will never force the girls to do anything they don’t want to do. In saying that we will attempt to have her paddle out and sit on her board to experience the beauty of the ocean and hopefully see some dolphins up close! When she completes the 4 weeks and is invited to join the Club, we offer the option to boogie board or participate in beach yoga as an alternative to surfing.
My daughter can't make all the sessions in the first 4 weeks? Is that ok?
It’s important that she is there for all sessions during the Initiation Program however we understand that life happens. If you know in advance that she will miss a number of the 8 sessions, we ask that you consider waiting for the next intake. This is for the benefit of everyone in the group since our program is designed so each week is built upon the previous and skills, confidence and friendships can grow stronger throughout.
- If a girl misses more than one surf lesson, she can make it up in a private lesson (additional fee).
- If a girl misses more than one workshop, she will be asked to join the next group.
- Once in the Club there are no attendance requirements.
Does my daughter need to bring her own surfboard and wetsuit?
During the 4-week Initiation program, boards and wetsuits will be provided. If she would prefer to use her own she is more than welcome to – just let us know in advance so we don’t bring extra equipment.
Once in the club, girls are required to bring their own wetsuit and surfboard. Need help buying or renting? We can help you. .
Will she always be with a surf instructor?
Yes! To ensure the safety and fastest progression of each girl we have a strict policy of no more than 4 girls to every 1 instructor during the 4-week Initiation Program. This allows us to provide each girl with the hands on attention she needs to feel comfortable and fast track her success.
Once in the Club, instructor and lifeguard supervision is provided.
What happens at the club's monthly events?
Each month will have a different theme and a guest speaker. Girls will be inspired by listening to each other, being introduced to a new Dragonfly insight and hearing from an amazing member of our Wellness network. From workshops in skincare, breath work, nutrition & self defense to hearing from experts in fields such as intimacy & relationships, self love, and instagram fame, we’ve got THE BEST connections to help us all discover the recipe for a more exciting, connected and fulfilled life! Plus you won’t leave empty handed with our merchandise give aways and sponsorship goodies. Members are welcome to bring a friend for $25.
What if she decides not to continue to program. Can we get a refund?
We can provide a 50% refund within the first week. After week 1 (3 sessions attended) no refunds will be given. We are very proud to say that we’ve never had a girl quit – in fact after one workshop, we’ve witnessed girls move mountains to get to the next one.
What is the parent session?
We invite parents to join us at the end of the first workshop. There you will get a chance to meet our amazing team as we walk you through the journey your daughter is embarking on. Also at this time we will set expectations, answer any questions you may have and demonstrate how you can best support your daughters growth.
Can my daughter attend the Dragonfly workshops and not the surfing part?
Our intakes dates on our Surf page are for the complete program including Dragonfly workshops and Surfing. However the Dragonfly Movement runs stand alone programs that are separate from the Surf Club. Check our website or contact us – jules@dragonflymovement.org
If you have a group of 10 or more girls we can also run a private group for you.
